The Kansas- Nebraska Act was 1854. The south thought it wasn’t fair for there to be more free states than slave states. The south thought this because, Kansas and Nebraska territories were above the 36 30 parallel, by geography they were part of the north but if they wanted slavery they could have it. All they had to do was vote on whether they wanted to be slave or free states. This would repeal the Missouri Compromise. The Republican Party was created in response to the Kansas- Nebraska Act. Their goal was to stop the spread of slavery into the new states and territories. They wanted to make the industries more modernized. This caused a lot of tension between the North and South. Look for my next post on the Dred Scott Case.

The fugitive slave law was issued in 1850. It made the northern people return any runaway slaves to their owners. This was so enforced that the already free African- Americans were taken to the south because they matched the description of the runaway slaves. The fugitive slaves and innocent African-American people were denied jury trials. There were more federal agents to enforce the new law. It bolstered the abolitionist movement. The Georgia platform was when Georgia accepted the measures of the compromise, as long as the North complied with the fugitive slave law and would not be allowed to ban the expansion of slavery into new territories and states. This endorsement of the Compromise of 1850 temporarily stopped the movement for the southerners to secede.  Look for my nex

The Missouri Compromise took place in 1820. It was when Missouri wanted to be let into the union as a slave state but then that would throw the balance of slave a free states off. This is where Henry Clay steps into play. He came up with the idea where Maine is added to the free states and Missouri can be a slave state. The other half of the Missouri Compromise was where no slavery would be allowed north of the 36 30 parallel. The Compromise of 1850 was in 1860…just kidding it was in 1850. California wants to become a free state, Henry Clay steps in again and this time comes up with the Compromise of 1850. The balance of slave and free states would become off balance, so California is let in the union, Texas gave up land and $10 million. After the Compromise of 1850, Slavery was abolished in D.C. and the Fugitive Slave Act was passed. My next post will be on more of the Fugitive Slave Act and the Georgia Platform.

States' Rights when the state or people in the state think the needs of the state have to come before the needs of the country. Nullification is when a US state refuses to help enforce federal laws in its state. This took place in 1832. An example would be someone who lives in Georgia says that they are a Georgian before they would say that they are an American. Now a days people say that they are an American person then they say what state they are from. Another example is when the states ignore the country's laws and go by their own laws. In a way they are considering themselves their own country. South Carolina also ignored federal tarrif laws, so they wouldn't have to pay money to the government. War almost broke out when President Jackson sent militia forces to South Carolina. During The antebellum period the  sates wanted more power than the federal government, that is why the south was called the confederates. Look out for my next post on the Missouri Compromise and The Compromise of 1850.

In case you were wondering, Sectionalism means tension between regions of one country. Each region of the USA had its own economic base. The northeast's economic base was dairy products, cattle, industry, and textile. The Midwest's economic base was corn and wheat. The Upper-south's economic base was tobacco, corn , and wheat. The lower South's economic base was cotton, sugar, and rice. The lower that you move into the south states there would be more slaves because, the more cotton is grown there and slaves were used to grow and harvest cotton. The farmers in the south needed all the help and workers that they could get. This was your short summary to sectionalism.
