The Missouri Compromise took place in 1820. It was when Missouri wanted to be let into the union as a slave state but then that would throw the balance of slave a free states off. This is where Henry Clay steps into play. He came up with the idea where Maine is added to the free states and Missouri can be a slave state. The other half of the Missouri Compromise was where no slavery would be allowed north of the 36 30 parallel. The Compromise of 1850 was in 1860…just kidding it was in 1850. California wants to become a free state, Henry Clay steps in again and this time comes up with the Compromise of 1850. The balance of slave and free states would become off balance, so California is let in the union, Texas gave up land and $10 million. After the Compromise of 1850, Slavery was abolished in D.C. and the Fugitive Slave Act was passed. My next post will be on more of the Fugitive Slave Act and the Georgia Platform.
